Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection consists of six series, the first of which includes R.A.C.E.'s organizational records, its laws of incorporation, by-laws, and a chronology of A.C.E. and R.A.C.E. until 1989. This series contains a few documents and correspondence with environmental concerns that are not specific to any R.A.C.E. project and thus not in the Project Files series.
The correspondence series contains letters to and from representatives of R.A.C.E. It is arranged by individual, then by date. This series may have some correspondence pertaining to particular projects within it, but we have kept its arrangement in the creators' original order.
The project files series is by far the largest. It consists of the R.A.C.E. Project Files--documents pertaining to specific environmental interests, lawsuits, appeals, and correspondence. This series is organized by project/interest; i.e., Land Between the Lakes, Shawnee National Forest, etc. There is a large number of legal documents.
Files of other organizations holds only one box of documents related to organizations and subjects of interest to R.A.C.E. but not directly associated with any particular project. The Printed Reference materials series contains documents, catalogs, guides, and articles of environmental interest to R.A.C.E.; basically, print reference materials for the Association. RACE-related clippings series holds newspaper and magazine clippings relating to R.A.C.E.-related interests and projects.
Biographical Note
The Regional Association of Concerned Environmentalists (R.A.C.E.) was organized in 1988 from an earlier (1983) group, "Association of Concerned Environmentalists," or A.C.E. Both were formed in direct response to what members saw as "atrocious land stewardship by the Forest Service." The primary officers of R.A.C.E. were Joseph Glisson, Mark Donham, and Kristi Hanson. In addition to concerns with the management of the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, R.A.C.E. correspondence, documents, and lawsuits deal with environmental issues within the Hoosier National Forest, Land Between the Lakes, Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, and AlliedSignal (later titled Honeywell) in Metropolis.
