Biographical Note

The Exploratory Student Advisement program officially began on December 3, 2012. The program combines the former Center for Academic Success and Pre-Major Advisement Center.

The roots of Center for Academic Success trace back to The Development Skills Program which was established in  1969. Seymour Bryson was the first director of the program which was developed by Counseling Center. The program provided academic support to educationally disadvantaged students, most of whom were the first in their family to attend college.  In April 1976 The Development Skills Program was absorbed into a broader program, General Academic Program. In  June 1976 The SIU Board of Trustees approved the Center for Basic Skills for students who were deficient in one or more areas of reading, writing or mathematics. In 1998 The Center for Basic Skills became part of University's Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Office. The program remained a two-semester (Fall, Spring) introduction to college life during the freshman year and was coordinated with Student Support Services.

In 2005 the Center for Basic Skills was renamed the Center for Academic Success. The center continued the two-semester academic support program for qualified freshmen. It provided extended academic transition between high school and college for students who demonstrated potential success at the University, but did not meet standards for regular admission. Services include peer mentors, role models, career counselors, and tutors.

In 2012 Exploratory Student Advisement (ESA) combined the former Center for Academic Success and Pre-Major Advisement Center.  The program  provides academic support and advisement to undecided students entering SIU Carbondale through University College. ESA's main programs include Exploratory Student - Undeclared (EXPU) and Exploratory Student - Provisional (EXPP). EXPU provides personal academic advisement for students and end-of-semester review reports of the students' academic progress. EXPP provides an academically sound program to assist students who may have deficiencies in reading, writing, speech, and/or study skills
