Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Daniel Berry letters consists of a volume of bound, typed copies of original letters from Berry to his wife Mary (Mollie) during the Civil War. The letters begin at Camp Logan in Shawneetown, Illinois, and continue to Memphis, Vicksburg, New Orleans and Helena, Arkansas.  Berry describes camp life in his letters along with observations of the Vicksburg and Red River campaigns.

Collection Historical Note

Daniel Berry (1835-1915) was born in Wortley, Yorkshire, England and was brought to the United States when he was six years old. In 1856 he moved to Illinois and taught school in Lawrence, Wabash and White counties. Berry moved to Carmi in 1860 to study medicine under Dr. E. L. Stuart.  He followed Stuart and served as second-assistant surgeon for the 87th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.  He was later promoted to first-assistant surgeon. After the war, Berry received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He married Mary A. B. Crebs in 1862 and they had eight children together, four of whom survived to adulthood.
