Abstract

Journals pertaining to freedom of the press and alternative publications collected by Charles L. Klotzer.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Charles L. Klotzer Collection consists of the many journals pertaining to freedom of the press, journalism in general, as well as reviews and alternative press publications, including those from foreign presses.  Of particular interest to local investigators are the 18 alternative newspapers from the 1960's and 70's, such as Big Muddy Gazette, Little Rebel, and Southern Free Press, all printed in the Carbondale region. Foreign presses of note are those from the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and Cuba.

Klotzer's alternative press collection is combined with a small collection of similar "underground" publications held by Southern Illinois University's Morris Library to assist the researcher.  These include well-known newspapers and magazines like the Ann Arbor Argus, Berkeley Barb, and the Village Voice. Some issues of the Big Muddy Gazette and the Chicago Seed were donated by Michael Chusid in 2016, filling in some gaps in our holdings of these periodicals.

A "Supplements" series will include additional, similar periodicals as they are donated .

Biographical Note

Charles L. Klotzer escaped with his family from Germany in 1939 as a 13-year old German-Jewish boy. This incident surely played a role in his life-long vocation as a journalist and freedom of speech advocate.  His career in journalism began in 1948 as assistant editor of the Troy, Illinois Tribune, working for the 19 year-old future Illinois senator Paul Simon, then the editor and publisher.  He was founder of the Greater St. Louis Jewish Star and later, editor of the St. Louis Jewish Light.

Klotzer and his wife Rose began the monthly FOCUS/Midwest in 1962, dealing with the social, political, and racial issues of the 1960’s. In 1970, they founded, with the help of area journalists, academicians and social activists the St. Louis Journalism Review. In 1983, the two publications merged.  The St. Louis Journalism Review (SJR), renamed the Gateway Journalism Review, moved to the journalism department of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, as of July 1, 2010. SJR was the recipient of many local and national awards and is the only local journalism review in the United States.

During the course of his journalistic career Klotzer collected alternative publications from across the political spectrum, other journalism reviews, and East German and North Korean propaganda.
