Abstract

Mounted photographs for an exhibit about Chicago reporter and southern Illinois native Virginia L. Marmaduke.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

25 black-and-white 8 by 10 inch photographs, many captioned, mounted on white board stock for an SIU exhibit depicting the career of Virginia L. Marmaduke.  Images include publicity shots of Marmaduke as celebrity journalist in Chicago: riding a camel in a Shriner parade, posing with former President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the 1964 World's Fair, and driving a cab and selling movie tickets as part of her "Other Guy's Job" series.  Many of these photographs are duplicates of prints found in Manuscript Collection 324, Folder 7.

Collection Historical Note

Known by her nickname as "The Duchess," Virginia L. Marmaduke spent more than three decades in journalism, much of it in Chicago.  Marmaduke made a name for herself as a newspaper reporter in the 1940s, assigned to murders and other crimes when few women covered such stories.  In the 1950s Marmaduke worked in Chicago radio and television.  In 1964 she retired to her native southern Illinois and lent her talents to Southern Illinois University Carbondale as ambassador, fundraiser, and benefactor.

Biographical Note

Virginia Marmaduke was a longtime Illinois journalist, first in downstate Herrin in the 1930s, and beginning in 1943 in Chicago, where she broke gender barriers to cover serious news stories and won the nickname "The Duchess."  Local fame led to a 1953 appearance on "This Is Your Life," which in turn meant a promotion from print to radio and tv journalism in Chicago.  In 1965 she retired to Pinckneyville, Illinois, where she helped promote Southern Illinois University and retained a keen interest in journalism and politics.
