Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Roy E. Abrahamson papers consist of his published and unpublished writing, conference reports, and his research on the German artist Henry Schaefer-Simmern. Abrahamson's writings consist of his dissertation, a book of original cartoons, unpublished poetry, teaching material, and photographs of his exhibit at Southern Illinois University's museum in 2007. Abrahamson has collected conference reports from all over the country as well as Finland. His research on Shaefer-Simmern includes copies of correspondence between the two, conference lectures, Shaefer-Simmern's published work including five books with one personally autographed, and an interview and biography written by Abrahamson.

Biographical Note

Roy E. Abrahamson, Ed.D., taught art education in the School of Art and Design and Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1965-1996.  He graduated with a B.S. in Art Education from the University of Minnesota in 1949, a Master's degree from San Francisco State College in 1952, and earned his doctorate from Teachers College of Columbia University, New York City, in 1965.  While at Minnesota, he took a summer class taught by German art educator Henry Schaefer-Simmern, who had fled Nazi Germany in 1937 after refusing to join the Nazi party.  Abrahamson was inspired by Schaefer-Simmern's teaching philosophy and studied his life and works throughout his career.  He considered Schaefer-Simmern to be his mentor and practiced his teaching method.
