Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Charles H. Lange papers consists primarily of oral history transcripts, corresponding reel-to-reel audio tapes, and photographs documenting rural life and culture in Washington County, Illinois.  The oral histories focus on religion and churches throughout the county, and the photographs depict aerial views of Washington County towns and farmland, as well as individual buildings and houses.  Lange's colleauge Melvin S. Brooks also created some of the recordings and transcripts.  These materials are likely the result of a Pilot Study of Washington County Research Project, and predominantly date 1956-1957.

Biographical Note

Charles H. Lange was a sociocultural anthropologist in the Department of Anthropology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  He began his career at SIUC in 1955, and served as department chair in 1956-1957 and 1967-1970.  Lange is noted for his research on Cochiti, New Mexico and the Cochiti pueblo people.  He directed the Cochiti Dam Archaeological Salvage Project from 1962-1966, which saw several Cochiti archaeological sites excavated.  Lange also taught at the University of Texas and Northern Illinois University, and was a research associate at the Laboratory of Anthropology, Museum of New Mexico.
