Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Ted R. Ragsdale Papers consist of his writings on improving public elementary education, as well as racial differences that are often associated with the eugenics studies of the early twentieth century.

Biographical Note

Ted R. Ragsdale was a professor of elementary education at Southern Illinois Normal University, later Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  He graduated from SINU in 1928, received his master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1931, and a doctorate from St. Louis University in 1942.  His career at SINU began in 1925 while he was a student.  He was named full professor at SIU in 1944, and also taught at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Colorado in visiting assignments.  The SIU Alumni Association awarded Ragsdale the Great Teacher award in June 1969.

Ragsdale was born on July 21, 1905 in Saline County, Illinois to T. H. and Jeanette Anderson Ragsdale of Galatia.  He married Lydia Dietrich in Murphysboro, Illinois on July 28, 1928.  They had one daughter, Anne Ragsdale Shinall.  He died on December 4, 1970.
