Abstract

Letters and papers documenting the German Army service of Gottlieb Schwarz (World War I and II) and Helmut Weiler (World War II).

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Pocket diaries, postcards, and official documents covering the World War I service of Gottlieb Schwarz (rank: Unteroffizier, promoted to Sergeant in 1918).  Includes letters from his brother Daniel Schwarz, a book of proverbs, two calendars, and his military identification books: Militarpass (World War I) and Wehrpass (World War II). Also includes a chronological list of World War I battles fought and newspaper clippings. The diaries describe positions, action taken, advances, lists of soldiers and their exact locations by tent, handwritten poems and Morse code information.

Several hundred letters, postcards, and other papers documenting the World War II service of Helmut Weiler (private first class).  Correspondents include his parents Maria and Anton (a forest ranger), sister Hilde, Karl Rimpp (friend), Gottfried Mueller (friend),  uncle Paul Weiler, aunt Melitta Weiler, and Ludwig Käshammer (friend).  The letters from Anton and Maria Weiler to Helmut become more desolate towards the end of 1943. They describe evacuations, bombings and news of many fallen friends and family members. Helmut is involved in military action in Africa and Italy, but exact places are never mentioned.  Also includes three newspapers and several newspaper clippings, a booklet for converting dollars to goldmarks, and a German propaganda leaflet, in English, targeting American and British troops landing at Nettuno, Italy, in early 1944.

Two folders of photographs depict the two wars including portraits of both soldiers and their comrades.
