Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Howard Webb, Jr. Collection of Campus Unrest is an overview of the nation-wide campus unrest, protests, demonstrations and assemblies, as well as the academic and administrative reform specific to Southern Illinois University Carbondale during and after the closing of the campus in May of 1970. The collection spans from 1967 to 1972, and consists of faculty correspondence, student protest flyers, speech transcripts, and newspapers, zines, and magazines.

Biographical Note

Howard W. Webb, Jr. received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa in 1953. He was a faculty member in the English Department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1956 to 1990, serving as chairman of the department, 1968-1972.

Separated Materials: The materials in this collection were separated from the rest Howard Webb's 1996 donation.  They were transferred to University Archives because the subject matter documenting university history.  The remainder of the 1996 donation is the Howard W. Webb, Jr. Papers in the manuscripts collection.
