Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Lloyd B. Sharp Papers document Sharp's directorship of the Outdoor Education Association, National Camp, and Life Camps.  The materials were collected and maintained by Sharp during the course of his career.  The collection consists of a wide variety of material.  There are numerous files of correspondence, survey material, reports, maps, and camper reviews concerning the operation or establishment of camps throughout the United States.  Much of the correspondence is between Sharp and religious leaders as many camps were affiliated with a variety of Christian denominations including Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Evangelical United Brethren.  Other groups include the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), and the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA).  Other material relating to National Camp, Life Camps, and camps throughout the country includes annual reports, song books, and camp newsletters.

Several files contain minutes, agendas, itineraries, and related correspondence regard annual meetings or conferences of the Outdoor Education Association, American Camping Association, National Camp, and the American Association of School Administrators.  Related files document Sharp's trips to numerous cities for meetings with local camping organizations or Christian denominations in charge of the camps.

Some files consist of correspondence and camp surveys documenting the Outdoor Education Association's relocation to Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the development of the outdoor education laboratory at Little Grassy Lake.

Biographical Note

Lloyd B. Sharp was a pioneer in outdoor education.  He was born in Kansas in 1895 and attended Emporia Normal School.  He later worked for the Playground and Recreation Association of Michigan.  In February 1923, Sharp began graduate studies in physical education at Teachers College, Columbia, Missouri where he completed his master's degree in 1924 and his PhD in 1930.

In 1925 Sharp was hired by Life Magazine to oversee Fresh Air summer camps for New York City children, and later established similar programs in New Jersey and Connecticut.  The camps taught children self-reliance and group relationships.  He opened National Camp in 1940 and continued to operate it even after Life Magazine closed its Life Camps in 1951.  Sharp continued National Camp under the newly created Outdoor Education Association.

In 1959 Sharp accepted a faculty position at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  He relocated the Outdoor Education Association to campus and influenced the establishment of the outdoor experiential education facility Touch of Nature.  National Camp closed in 1962.  Sharp died in 1963.
