Scope and Contents of the Materials

Items include a scrapbook of World War I photos and postcards kept by Captain Wallace W. Ashby, Company C, 304th Engineers.  Photos depict battlefront, French villages, General John J. Pershing reviewing the troops, and training at Camp Meade; postcards include WWI memorials and views of Nice acquired during leave in 1919.  Also includes copies of military documents related to Ashby family service in WWI, a personal memorandum of Captain Ashby's experience, and a WWII ration book.  The WWII service of Sergeant William Clark Ashby is represented by copies of military documents; three snapshots taken March 27, 1945, in Worms, Germany; and newspaper and magazine clippings.  Printed material covers William Clark Ashby's work to preserve natural areas in southern Illinois.

Biographical Note

Born in Duluth, Minnesota, educated at George Washington University (A.A.), University of Chicago (B.S. and Ph.D., Botany), and University of California Berkeley.  World War II veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, wounded in April, 1945.  Professor emeritus, Biology Department, Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
