Biographical Note

Ned Trovillion grew up near Golconda, Illinois. As a teenager, he became very interested in photography and bought his first camera.  One year later, Ned documented the 1937 Ohio River flood in Golconda. He married Jan in 1940, joined the military and served in WWII. After his discharge from the military, both Ned and Jan enrolled in the University of Illinois. Upon graduation, the family moved back to Pope County, and Ned became a high school agriculture teacher. Both Ned and Jan received their masters degrees from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. After 9 years of teaching, he began a 30-year career in the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. Ned and his family moved to Vienna, Illinois. In 1972, Ned and Jan began traveling the world, visiting over 50 countries. In the mid-1980s, he contributed some of his best photos to a Southern Illinois tourism guide, which gave wide-spread recognition to his work.  The Illinois state tourism agency used his Garden of the Gods image in a two-page advertisement in national magazines and metropolitan newspapers and he won numerous awards as an amateur photographer. In 1995, Ned published a collection of his photos titled Southern Illinois: A Photographers Love for the Countryside and its Beauty.
