Scope and Contents of the Materials

Professor Christian Moe of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Theater Department donated these photographs, which depict plays presented by the Southern Players, the New Salem State Park Kelso Hollow Theater, and the Department of Theater's international play writing competition in 1972.

Biographical Note

Christian Hollis Moe received an AB in History from the College of William and Mary, an MA in Dramatic Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a PhD from Cornell University in 1958 before joining the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Theater Department faculty that same year.  Moe was a Theater Department faculty member from 1958-1997.  During this time he developed and headed the playwriting program, served as department chair and director of graduate studies and co-executive director of the McLeod Summer Playhouse.  SIUC's laboratory theater is named in his honor.  He also cofounded The Stage Company in Carbondale, Illinois. Honors include a Fulbright fellowship to Australia, and past appointment as American College Theater National Playwriting Awards chair.
