Scope and Contents of the Materials
The collection consists mainly of letters to Schneider, manuscripts, reprints of articles by authors other than Schneider, and material relating to organizations in which Schneider was active.
The correspondence ranges from 1923 to 1976. The earlier letters include well-known correspondents such as John Dewey, Wendell T. Bush, Sidney Hook, George Herbert Mead, and Frederick J.E. Woodbridge. Although some of the letters are concerned with Schneider's philosophical theories and ideas, most of them comment on his books or articles, or concern his European travels; extensive correspondence exists for the period Schneider was working with UNESCO.
There are about 40 manuscripts in the collection, most of which are carbons; approximately 15 are known to be unpublished. Also in the collection are chapters from his books, copies of some of his lectures, also several articles by Dewey and Woodbridge which are now scarce.
The collection also contains minutes and matters pertaining to the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Society for the Study of Religion, East-West Philosophers' Conference and the International Association for the Study of History of Religions, reflecting Schneider's interest in these associations.
In addition to the manuscript material in this collection, there are 46 standing volumes, some of which came from the libraries of Wendell T. Bush, John Dewey, and Frederick Woodbridge. Only three of Schneider's own works are included, one being part of the Woodbridge Lecture series. The volumes included in the American Religion Series are the products of Ph.D. research to which Schneider devoted special attention, since they are aspects of his own research in this field.
Biographical Note
Herbert Wallace Schneider was born on March 16, 1892, in Berea, Ohio. He studied under John Dewey at Columbia University where he received his Ph.D. in philosophy, later he became John Dewey’s teaching assistant.
In 1928 and 1937 Schneider was a research fellow in Italy, and made a careful study of fascism, its roots, and expression in Corporate State theory.
After serving as an instructor and assistant professor at Columbia, he was appointed full professor of religion and philosophy in 1929. In addition, he was a Fulbright Fellow to France in 1950 where he lectured on American philosophy at the Universities of Paris, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Grenoble, and Marseilles; from 1952-1957 he was an Eranos lecturer in Ascona, Switzerland. He also served as a visiting professor at the Universities of Illinois, Washington, and Georgia, Emory University, Colorado College, Pomona College, and taught summers at the University of Minnesota, University of Hawaii, and Western Washington State College.
After his retirement in 1957, Schneider was a Distinguished Service Professor at Colorado College from 1958-1959; Professor of Philosophy at the Claremont Graduate School from 1959-1967 and director of Blaisdell Institute for Advanced Study in World Cultures and Religions (affiliated with Claremont Colleges) from 1959-1963, while serving as Acting Dean of the Claremont Graduate School from 1960-1962. In 1967, Schneider became Emeritus Professor of Claremont Graduate School.
He has written numerous articles and books, some of them endowed lectures: Three Dimensions of Public Morality (Indiana), Morals for Mankind (Missouri), and Ways of Being (Columbia).
Schneider lived in retirement in Claremont, California, until his death on October 15, 1984.
