Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of an arithmetic exercise book, correspondence dated from 1839 to 1850, and a newspaper article on the death of Anthony Pate, son of Perlemon Pate, Sr.  The majority of the correspondence is from Anthony in Louisiana.  These letters relate many of the hardships of a cotton farmer in the 1840's.  In the letters, Anthony describes the successes and failures of his crops, the prices that he gets for them, and the births, deaths, and illnesses of his large family.

Biographical Note

Perlemon Pate, Sr. pioneered in Jackson County, Illinois, in 1841.  He had migrated to Southern Illinois from Tennessee and bought a large farm north of Murphysboro from the government where he raised his family of nine sons.
