Biographical Note

John Hull was the second President of Southern Illinois State Normal University and served from 1892-1893.  He was born in Marion County, Illinois on February 6, 1839.  In 1857 he entered the State Normal School in Normal, Illinois and graduated in 3 years with honors.  He was named principal of the Salem, Illinois public schools, before becoming a math teacher at Illinois State Normal, serving as chair until 1865.  Hull then managed Bloomington public schools for 2 years.  When publishing house Brewer & Tiliston offered him a position, the Bloomington community elected him a member of the city’s Board of Education where he served 4 years.

In 1868 Hull founded “The Schoolmaster, “The Chicago Schoolmaster,” and “The Illinois Schoolmaster” which were publications on educational topics.  From 1869-1875 he was the County Superintendent of Schools of McLean county.  Hull arrived at Southern Illinois State Normal University in 1875 to serve as a professor of mathematics.  He rose to become registrar and Vice President before being named Robert Allyn’s successor as university President in 1892.  In 1893 he led the preparation of the SINU exhibit at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago which raised the profile of the university.

Hull served as chairman of the executive committee of the County Superintendents Association from 1873-1874.  He was also chairman of the executive committee of the State Teachers’ Association in 1873 and was president in 1874.  After leaving SINU in 1893 he served as President of the State Normal School at River Falls, Wisconsin and retired after 1 year because of health reasons and relocated to New Whatcom, Washington, where he edited a daily newspaper.  Hull married Mary Frances Hull on April 3, 1862, who was born in Bloomington, Illinois in 1841.  She died on August 19, 1882.
