Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists mainly of correspondence. In addition it includes biographical information about Monroe Crawford, newspaper clippings which document the activities of lawyer, judge, Civil War veteran, and politician, Monroe C. Crawford.

Biographical Note

Monroe Crawford was born on May 26, 1835, on a farm in Franklin County, Illinois.  He was licensed to practice law before continuing his education at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where he received a Bachelor of Law degree.

Upon returning to Benton, Illinois, Mr. Crawford opened a law office.  In 1856 he was elected to the office of State's Attorney and again in 1860. In 1862 he volunteered as a federal soldier and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

      In 1886 he was elected judge of the County Court of Union County, Illinois, a position he held until December of 1918.  His term as judge totaled 44 years. Judge Crawford died on March 8, 1919.
