Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Franz Senkel Collection contains 153 postcards, all in German,  written between 1912 and 1918.  The majority of cards are written from Franz Senkel to his wife and children.  Each of the cards has a colorful picture on the front, sometimes of a soldier and his wife, sometimes of a father and his children, and the cards often include a love poem.

Biographical Note

Franz Senkel was married to Marta Elisabeth Senkel, and they lived with their children in Eisenach in Thuringia.  In September of 1914, Franz joined the German army to fight in World War I.  He was stationed for 2 years in Germany in various cities in the state of Hesse.  During this time, he was in Replacement Battalion, Infantry Regiment 94, Recruit Depot 3.  In August of 1916, Franz was sent to fight in Belgium.  He was then in the Company 9, Battalion 11 Infantry Replacement Troops.  Franz remained in Beverlev, Belgium until the time he stops writing in June 1918.
