Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection, all in German, includes 1 diary, 79 letters and postcards to and from Friedrich Diekmann dating from 1915 - 1918, 1 photo album and loose photographs of both military scenes and family, an I.D. tag, a military pass, 1 roll of negatives, and various miscellaneous documents including death announcements from Friedrich's parents. Most of the letters and postcards in the collection were written from Friedrich to his family while serving in the German army during WWI.  Some, however, were written to Friedrich from his parents, sister, and good friends.  The photo album begins in August 1914 and contains family and military pictures.  In the front of the diary, there is a "clothing card" good for the year 1918.  It lists different items of clothing that a soldier could receive upon presenting the card.  There are names listed in the back of the diary, many of which are crossed out.  [The crossed out names may be soldiers who were killed.]

Biographical Note

Friedrich (Fritz) Diekmann was born in Gutersloh on October 9, 1891, to Heinrich and Sophie Diekmann. Friedrich  joined the German army on August 7, 1914 to serve in the First World War.  He began his service in Foot Artillery Regiment 14, then was later transferred to Foot Artillery Battery 728, and finally to Foot Artillery Battalion 74.  Friedrich fought on the Western Front in 1915, the Eastern Front in 1916 & 1917, and again on the Western Front in 1918.  Friedrich was demobilized from the army on November 27, 1918.

Friedrich had a sister at home and a brother named Paul.  He also had a good friend, Hildegard Schaltenburg (Gard Leuber), who wrote to him often.

After the war, Friedrich became a bank attorney.  He married Hilde Höttcher.  During the Nazi period in the late 1930s, Friedrich had to have a Nazi military pass even though he was no longer serving in the military.  The pass is included in the collection.  On May 11, 1935, Friedrich was awarded with a Certificate of Honor for fighting on the front lines.
