Biographical Note

Georg Fricke was born in the town of Ritterhude near Bremen.  In September 1915, Georg was taken prisoner of war and held in a camp in Stobs near Hawick in Scotland as prisoner number 9731.  Georg writes consistently to his girlfriend Sophie throughout his time there.

While in the camp Georg was actively involved in a gymnastics club, a theater group, a book printer's club, a Christian group, drama club, soccer club, gardening club, choir, Catholic group, a band, a farming club, teacher's group, math and science club, stenographer's club, and a chess club.  Along with all the clubs, the camp also had a bakery, furniture makers, clock makers, tattoo artists, and a school.  A number of prisoners in the camp were certified teachers who held classes on a variety of topics within the camp.  A large number of books written in various languages were also offered to the prisoners to read, and many of them learned new languages while in the camp.

One of the biggest forms of entertainment in the camp was reading the Stobsiade, the newsletter printed by the prisoners.  Not only did prisoners read the newsletter, but many of their families back in Germany were subscribers.  The 2nd edition of the newsletter reports that the first edition sold over 3,000 copies.
