Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Robert G. Potter collection contains his correspondence from 1917--1919 and two photograph negatives.  The bulk of the collection is comprised of letters written by Mr. Potter to his mother, with roughly twenty from his time in France, and also includes approximately twenty-six letters written to him by various friends and family members.  The negatives appear to be two portraits taken at a farm, but the subjects are not identified.

Biographical Note

Robert G. Potter served in the first World War as a member of the 325th Infantry, 82nd Division. Mr. Potter was responsible for training horses and mules for riding.  He continued this work overseas when he was relocated to France.

Although Robert Potter never saw battle, he was among the first groups of New England soldiers to train at Fort Devens.  Located in Ayers, Massachusetts, Fort Devens served as temporary quarters for troops from 1917 until its close in 1995.  From there, he was stationed at Fort Upton, New York, and Fort Gordon, Georgia.  In France, he served at both Dommarien and Anois.  Mr. Potter returned to the United States in May, 1919, unharmed by the war.
