Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Teeter family collection consists of family history and genealogical data, personal correspondence among family members, business and financial records, family deeds and wills, manuscripts written for university credit and for publication, photographs, and clippings concerning southern Illinois history, Carbondale growth and development, and Southern Illinois University.  The Teeter family contributed, mainly through the presence of Lillian Teeter, to the culture and history of Carbondale. Lillian Teeter was the focus of a book about Carbondale entitled Miss Lillian's Town and kept a great deal of correspondence and family artifacts that lend a unique perspective of the history of Carbondale, from the point of view of a family spanning from the end of the 19th century to her death in 1977. This collection also contains family artifacts, including a small coffee pot that may be from either the Spanish American War, or H.H. Teeter's famous filter invention. Special files in the Teeter Family collection include letters concerning the planning of the East St. Louis High School 50-year class reunion in 1973 which was filmed by Darren McGavin and issued as a movie titled "American Reunion". Also of interest is a journal containing the records of the Carbondale Civic and Charity Club, predecessor of the Carbondale Women's Club, from 1907 through 1913.

Biographical Note

Horace Hollister Teeter arrived in Southern Illinois in 1865 where he married Nancy Belle and had six children while establishing himself as an entrepreneur and businessman in Carbondale. His accomplishments include the development and marketing of an innovative coffee percolator, production of baking powder, and a production and sale of his own brand of furniture polish. Around 1900 he founded the Excelsior Paint Company which he managed until his death in 1924.

All six of the Teeter children were raised in Carbondale. Lillian Teeter remained in the area and taught public school. Lula Teeter died soon after giving birth to Louis Teeter, son of Frank Teeter, and the child was brought up by Lillian and Kate and later married Margaret Teeter with whom he had a son, Tim Teeter. It is Tim Teeter who is the last family member to have materials in the collection, ending in 1977 with Lillian Teeter's will.

The Teeters provide an authentic view of family life in Carbondale and southern Illinois from the end of the 19th century to Lillian's death in 1977.
