Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Paul Schildwächter Collection contains 5 diaries dating from August 13, 1914 through June 11, 1918, 232 family photos dating from the late teens through the 1970s (the majority dating from the teens through 1940s), 87 military photos from the World War I period, 1 program for the celebration of "75 Years of the Organization of Old Fraternities Dortmund" from 1955, one booklet for the "Celebration Speech for the Coming of the 75th Anniversary of the Fraternity of Alemannia in Marburg" from 1949, Paul Schildwächter's Doctor's certificate along with 4 copies of it, one newspaper clipping about a Kegel (bowling) team, one newspaper clipping about Karneval in Münster, 3 letters from 1957, 5 groupings of Kegel (bowling) songs, 1 booklet on coin collecting, one newsletter from the club "Friends of Germany's Past History," 1 booklet that is a formal reply by Heinrich Schildwächter, Paul's father, to a letter written by the area's Master of Pension, Mr. Eich, one university document from Paul Schildwächter printed in Latin, 1 document saying Paul was accepted as a law student, 1 saying Paul was accepted into the Law and State Sciences faculty in Münster, and 1 photo album containing 146 pictures.

The large amount of pictures in the collection (Box 2) provides us with a view of different aspects of the life of the Schildwächter family throughout the years.  There are many pictures of Paul's father, Heinrich Shildwächter, the family vacationing in Borkum, weddings, babies, and a trip to Canada, along with numerous photos of Paul's life in the military.  One can see that Paul was very active in his Kegel team, as the collection includes songs that were written for this team to sing together.

Biographical Note

Paul Schildwächter was the son of Heinrich and Maria Schildwächter of Lütgendortmund.  As Paul was growing up, he and his family often enjoyed vacationing in Borkum on the Friesian Islands.

Paul served as a Lieutenant Non-Commissioned Commanding Officer in the German army during World War I.  He was in Division Brückentrain number 92 of the 22nd Infantry Division.  As Paul began serving, he was first sent to Belgium in 1914, to Poland in 1915, and then to the Ukraine during 1916, 1917, and part of 1918.  Paul returned home to Germany in late 1918.

Paul Schildwächter's father, Heinrich, was a medical doctor in Lütgendortmund in North-Rhine Westphalia, where he helped found a hospital and was held in high regard throughout the community.

Before the war, Paul attended the Land University of Giessen and the Philipps University in Marburg and obtained doctorate degrees in Law and Medicine.  Paul was made a member of the Law and State Sciences faculty at the University in Münster in 1912.  Paul was also a member of the Alemannia fraternity in Marburg, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in June 1949.

In 1948, Paul was discharged from the German military.  He then lived and worked in Münster and Vlotho, where he actively participated in a Kegel (bowling) team and was mayor of Vlotho for a time.
