Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection includes materials related to business and commerce, slave transactions, military orders during both the War of 1812 and the American Civil War, as well as treaties with Native American tribes.  Newspapers, banking notes, propaganda leaflets, and presidential proclamations are also found within the collection.

Biographical Note

Alfred C. Berol (1892-1974), who assembled this collection of broadsides, was president of the Eagle Pencil Company (later named Berol Corporation) of Bristol, Connecticut.  He was an avid collector of a wide array of rare books and manuscripts

Acquisition Method: In the winter of 1969, Alfred Berol donated this collection to Morris Library's Special Collections Research Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He made contact with Dr. Ralph McCoy, and arranged for the delivery of the collection in which Mr. Berol titled, "Broadsides of American Historical Interest," containing materials from before the American Revolution, to the booming industrial age of the United States.

Millerite broadside in support of the predicted coming of Christ in the year 1843, based on calculations from Biblical prophecy.  Printed with 24-line poem by Amanda Sumner dated January 1, 1842.  No printer or printing location given.  An Amanda Sumner died in 1849 and is buried in Morgan Township, Ohio.
