Workforce Education and Development | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center
Prior to July 1, 1993 this department was known as
Department of Vocational Education Studies.
At the December 12, 1974 meeting of the Board of Trustees, it was resolved to combine the departments of Occupational Education, Home Economics Education, Business Education, and cross appointed faculty in Agricultural Education into a single departmental unit. As distinguished from the School of Technical Careers, the Department of Vocational and Occupational Education prepared teachers of vocational and occupational education. In 1985, the Department merged majors and eliminated several non-subscribed specializations. Since 1985, the Department has taken a role that allows for exploration of various alternatives for restructuring majors and specializations, believing that curriculum should allow for flexibility to take advantage of accelerating technological and social change. By changing the title of the Department (effective August 15, 1993), the title of graduate programs, restructuring curricula, and eliminating under-enrolled specializations, the Department can better focus its resources, communicate its mission, and lay the groundwork for a more orderly program delivery and planning.
