Within guidelines set by the President, the chief officer for Student Services is responsible for developing and maintaining a campus environment characterized by high student morale, student pride, and pride in the University. Additional duties and responsibilities are to: coordinate a program of student services and welfare; to develop and administer a student disciplinary program; to work with budgets; and act as fiscal control officer for the Student Affairs budget. Responsibilities outside of RG 13 include coordinating the student affairs areas of Student Life (formerly RG 82); Student Services (formerly RG 83); Health Service (formerly RG 80); the Student Center (formerly RG 85); and University Housing (formerly RG 81). In 1979 the Office of Student Affairs assumed responsibility for Men's Intercollegiate Athletics (RG 51), and Women's Intercollegiate Athletics (RG 52). The Vice President for Student Affairs in conjunction with the Staff in Student Life, work with Undergraduate Student Government in the development of policies concerning students and student code.
Dr. George Mace was selected to serve as Dean of Students, June 16, 1972, pending selection of a Vice President of Student Affairs. On September 15, 1973, Bruce Swinburne was appointed the Dean of Students and in 1975 became the first Vice President for Student Affairs.
