Joseph E. Terpinitz Vertical File Manuscript | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center
1908 memorandum by Joseph E. Terpinitz for Professor George W. Smith of Southern Illinois Normal University. Smith and Terpinitz were neighbors in Carbondale, and Smith solicited Terpinitz's memories of the Lincoln-Douglas debate in Jonesboro, September 15, 1858. Smith adapted a portion of this memorandum in his account of the debate, When Lincoln Came to Egypt, , p. 124.
Terpinitz recounts his role in the debate festivities, as leader of a string band hired by the Democrats. He also describes his upbringing in Austria, musical training, participation in the 1848 revolution in Vienna, and subsequent emigration to America, where he settled with his father in Union County, Illinois.
