Biographical Note for Southern Illinois University (Carbondale campus). Dean of Women. :

The first mention of a Dean of Women position at Southern Illinois University is found in the May 31, 1926 minutes of the Illinois Normal School Board.  Lucy K. Woody served as the first Dean of Women from 1926-1948.  Subsequent Deans of Women were Helen Shuman (1948-1950), Leah Farr (1950-1952), and Mildred Schrotberger (1952-1959).  Loretta K. Ott was appointed from Assistant Dean of Women to serve as the acting dean from August 15, 1958 to July 1, 1959, during which Schrotberger took an extended leave of absence and resigned on July 1.  The university did not fill the vacancy with permanent replacement.  The last mention of the Dean of Women position is found in the Board of Trustees 1959-1960 annual report.  Ott served as an Assistant Dean in Student Affairs, and was reassigned as Assistant to the Dean of Student Affairs on July 1, 1966.

The Board of Trustees created the Office of Student Affairs in 1951 to coordinate all student personnel services not associated with academic instruction, and supervise all student activities and organizations.  It consisted of the Student Activities Office, Student Special Services Office, and the Counseling and Testing Service.  The Office of Student Affairs was to be administered by a Director in cooperation with the Dean of Men and Dean of Women.  I. Clark Davis, who had been Dean of Men since 1949, was appointed Acting Director of Student Affairs effective July 1, 1951, and retained the Dean of Men title.  He was made Director of Student Affairs effective July 1, 1958.
