Hugh Dalziel Duncan Papers, 1913-1970 | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center
Hugh Dalziel Duncan's collection contains unpublished manuscripts of three longer works written partly while Duncan was at Southern Illinois University, and also several shorter works. Two of these books were major elaborations on his theory of Symbolic communication. Also included in the collection are numerous drafts of such published works as, Symbols and Society and Symbols and Social Theory, as well as manuscripts of various papers, lectures, radio talks, and book reviews, many of which were published.
Duncan's correspondence with Kenneth Burke, who was his strongest intellectual influence, stretched over 30 years and reveals the intensity this quest for the key to symbolic interaction, which he believed was the key to understanding society. He also corresponded, although not extensively, with some of the best known sociologists of our time: C. Wright Mills, Howard Becker, Ralf Dahrendorf, Erving Goffman, Marshall McLuhan, David Reisman, Edward Shils and others. Among his most engaging correspondents was the idiosyncratic and creative architect William Gray Purcell, who shared his enthusiasm for Louis Sullivan, as did Richard Nickel who devoted himself to rescuing Sullivan artifacts from demolished buildings.
Some unpublished creative work of Duncan's own is also included among the archival papers.
