The Elizabeth Ramsden Eames Papers span the academic as well as the liberatory career of Elizabeth Ramsden Eames, a Philosophy Professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1963-1990. Elizabeth was an active scholar, as was her husband, S. Morris Eames, who also taught philosophy at Carbondale: hence, half the collection consists of their published articles, manuscripts, drafts, bibliographies, notes, and professional correspondence. Most of the scholarly work pertains to John Dewey and other pragmatists, as well as Bertrand Russell, with whom Elizabeth had correspondence (see box 2, folder 2). Both Eames also had an interest in logic; boxes 3-5 contain tapes of their class lectures on the subject. Also included are tapes of the Winterthur Seminars in American Philosophy and entitled "Philosophy of Peirce." Several of these audio tapes have been digitized. The books produced from the seminars are (The Philosophy of George Herbert Mead; The Philosophy of William James). Also of note in the collection are copies of correspondence between John Dewey and George Herbert Mead, as well as correspondence and eulogy of James Hayden Tufts.
The other half of the collection consists of correspondence, reports, court records, and meeting minutes relating to Elizabeth’s outstanding participation in the transformation of Affirmative Action programs and discrimination policies at Southern Illinois University. Also included in this material is related LexisNexis resources, documentation of similar policies at other schools, and a wealth of employment data relating to minority demographics.
