[Back to Formatted Version]
Brief Description:

The William B. Schneider faculty papers contain his writings and administrative and instructional materials from 1948 through 1964.  Although the collection does not contain any published writings by William B. Schneider, both a scrapbook and journal of his personal writing are present.  Of note in the scrapbook are his unpublished poems, short stories, personal letters, and copies of addresses he gave at various events.  A hand-written index of the scrapbook can be found on its first few pages.  The journal records Schneider's "thoughts upon men and things," giving his personal response to occurrences in daily life.  Tucked within each are newspaper clippings and programs saved by Schneider.  The binding and arrangement of the scrapbook and journal have been maintained.

The remainder of the William B. Schneider collection is primarily comprised of his papers as an Southern Illinois University Carbondale administrator and instructor.  Office memos, faculty bulletins, and committee minutes are included as well as information documenting the creation of a doctorate program in English at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  All have been sorted by category or committee and ordered chronologically.  The records of Schneider's career as an instructor consist of course syllabi, blank and completed exams, and testing and teaching materials.  Grammar and literature exams have been separated and arranged by course number when given, and duplicate copies have been paper clipped together.

Biographical Note for Schneider, William B., (1898-1964.) :

Hailing from Floraville, a small town in southwestern Illinois, William B. Schneider spent his life improving English education in the state of Illinois.  He began his academic training at the University of Illinois, where he received both a bachelor's and master's degree, and earned his doctoral degree from the University of Chicago.  During this time in Chicago, Schneider married Alicia Edmonds on June 8, 1926.

Schneider's teaching career took him to universities both in and out of Illinois, but never too far from home.  Before accepting a position at Southern Illinois University in 1936, Schneider had taught at Eastern Illinois University, George Williams College, University of Chicago, and Indiana University.  As a professor, he spearheaded the 1943 movement to promote SIU from a teachers college to full university.  In recognition of this and other achievements, William B. Schneider was appointed chairman of SIU's English department, a position which he held for sixteen years.

Schneider proved to be an active administrator within the English department.  He led the campaign to add a doctorate program in English to the degrees offered at SIU, and his efforts were rewarded with its implementation in the fall of 1960.  He also took part in organizing summer workshops for local high school teachers, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa for forty years.  William B. Schneider retired in 1963, and died on July eighteenth of the following year at the age of 65.
