The collection consists largely of correspondence regarding several facets of the Association for Documentary Editing. These include the formation of the Association for Documentary Editing (as well as other administrative files, minutes, and committee records), correspondence and manuscripts for "A Guide to Documentary Editing" (published in 1987), materials related to the organization of annual conventions, membership records, financial records, correspondence regarding several awards, and correspondence related to a questionnaire about members' projects and protocol.
The records reflect the Association's activities relating to the "[encouragement of] excellence in documentary editing by providing means of cooperation and exchange of information among those concerned with documentary editing and by promoting broader understanding of the principles and values underlying the practice of documentary editing" (Constitution of the Association for Documentary Editing).
The collection was organized into seven series: the Association for Documentary Editing's "A Guide to Documentary Editing" (1987), annual conventions, organization records, membership records, financial records, Association awards, and results from a questionnaire about members' projects and protocol. A description of each series can be found in the Arrangement section.
The documents in this collection arrived in twelve accessions over the course of several years. More documents are likely to be added as time goes on. The materials primarily date to the earlier days of the Association for Documentary Editing - from 1978 to about 1990 (with the earlier dates being represented more frequently than the later dates).
There is a reliable record of the early history of the Association for Documentary Editing due to the fact that the collection was culled from many different individuals (who, perhaps given their chosen profession as editors and historians, kept fairly detailed and organized personal records). Therefore, consistent threads of communication were organized throughout the course of processing by taking correspondence from both sides of a conversation.
Though the inclusive range of all the material is from 1977 to 2004, overall there is a paucity of information after 1990. Some information exists regarding annual conventions held after 1990, though the series with the most documents after this date is the series containing financial records. However, overall there is significantly less documentation from more recent years.
Much of the material is from persons who occupied the positions of President, Secretary-Treasurer (later divided into two posts - Secretary, and Treasurer), and Director of Publications. Mary-Jo Kline, as author of "A Guide to Documentary Editing" (1987), also contributed a significant portion of the correspondence.
There are many people represented within the vast body of correspondence in this collection. However, the following individuals contributed a majority of the correspondence: Charlene Bickford, Warren Billings, Jo Ann Boydston, Lester Cappon, David Chesnutt, Don Cook, Charles Cullen, Richard Leffler, John Kaminski, Mary-Jo Kline, Jon Kukla, Arthur Link, Beth Luey, Thomas Mason, Joel Myerson, Barbara Oberg, Linda Pike, Robert Rutland, Richard Showman, Harriet Simon, John Y. Simon, Raymond Smock, Sharon Ritenour Stevens, and Celeste Walker.
