Scope and Contents: The Southern Illinois Folk Arts Research Project records consist of grant files, field notes, recorded interviews, transcripts, and photographs used for the creation of the booklet Expressions: Folkways in Southern Illinois. The records document folk art, folklore, folk music, coal mining, the Orthodox Church in Southern Illinois, and the African American community in Shawneetown, Illinois. The collection is organized into two series. Records and Photographs contains correspondence, grant files, and photographs pertaining to the field project, the creation of Expressions, photograph and interview participation consent, , and index of the slides and tapes. Audio and Cassette Tapes include reel-to-reel and cassette tapes of interviews and music of local folk artists, Orthodox Church members, and coal miners.
