Russ Wright Vietnam War correspondence, 1956-1966 | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center
ID: 1/7/MSS 379
Extent: 1.0 Cubic Feet
Scope and Contents: This collection contains correspondence between Willard "Russ" Wright and his parents, as well as some aquaintences. The correspondence was written during Wright's employment at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1956-1957) in Washington D.C., and his service in the United States Navy (1962-1966), including time at the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, and service on the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga in the Vietnam War. His naval correspondence is written from several locations including San Diego, CA , the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. Topics Wright discussed include his day-to-day life in the FBI and Navy, classes he took, his romantic relationships, and plans for the future. Those writing to him mostly discuss life in Murphysboro, Illinois. There are few letters written by Wright for the first half of 1963, suggesting some correspondence is missing. The collection does not contain letters Wright wrote to anyone other than his parents.
