Socialist Workers Party Pamphlet on the Dewey Commission and Mission to Moscow, 1943
[Back to Formatted Version]
Brief Description: The pamphlet promotes the verdict of the Dewey Commission (1937) and criticizes the pro-Stalin film Mission to Moscow (Warner Brothers, 1943). Officially known as the Commission of Inquiry into the Charges Made against Leon Trotsky in the Moscow Trials, the body, headed by its chairman John Dewey, sought to impartially investigate the truth of the allegations made against Leon Trotsky and his son by Joseph Stalin’s communist regime. The Dewey Commission concluded that Trotsky and his son were free of all charges made during the Moscow Trials. The pamphlet also decries the film Mission to Moscow as a work of propaganda by the United States government. The film was made at the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in an effort to promote the World War II alliance between the U.S.A. and Soviet Union. The cover of the brochure declares the Moscow Trials are “frame-ups” and Mission to Moscow “whitewashes Stalin’s crimes.”
