Scope and Contents: The records of the Southern Illinois University Bicentennial Committee document planning, funding, and organization of events held by the university to celebrate the United States bicentennial. This collection also includes information on statewide bicentennial events in Illinois as well as national events. Some of the programs SIU approved and hosted included The Blacksmith as Artisit and Craftsman 1776-1976, Brief History of Geology of Southern Illinois, Historic Inventory of Carbondale, and an Exhibit of Crafts of Applachia. The records include memorandums, correspondence, forms for funding and program approval, meeting minutes and agendas, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The committee was chaired by Rex Karnes, who was Assistant Director of the Division of Area Services at SIUC.
