The WSIU-TV records document the educational public television programming, administrative activities, and teacher professional development institutes created or hosted by WSIU-TV and the Southern Illinois Instructional Television (later Technology) Association (SIITA). The collection provides information on the establishment of WSIU-TV Channel 8 in 1961 and the implementation of instructional television programming in Southern Illinois, through both the Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction initiative and SIITA. A major activity documented in the collection are the National Teacher Training Institutes hosted at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the 1990s and early 2000s, which were professional development workshops on using technology in the classroom. Also of note are records pertaining to PBS Mathline and middle school mathematics video education. The collection documents other topics and activities including the implementation of distance learning programs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, photographs of SIITA staff, “Many Faces, Many Voices” and study circles on diversity issues, and collected research on the nature of instructional television from the 1960s and 1970s.
