Southern Illinois Music Archives, 1946-2015 | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center
The Southern Illinois Music Collection, begun by Alex Kirt as part of his MFA graduate studies, preserves and promotes music written and/or performed by southern Illinois musicians. Kirt sees this collection as more than just music, but "a documentary of the history of the area." The Special Collections Research Center stores, preserves, and makes available to the public, this music from local groups such as The Dixie Diesels, Coal Kitchen, and The Woodbox Gang, to name only a few. The collection is a mirror to local history and events, available to the public through digitized audio files and earlier physical recordings, such as records and CDs. Event posters provide an additional cultural perspective on both the local music scene and the southern Illinois region itself.
Additional material was added to this collection, consisting of the operating records of WCIL AM and FM radio station. This includes scrapbook pages, general correspondence, photocopies of articles about WCIL, as well as assorted brochures, ads, posters, and bumper stickers. This material ranges in date from 1950 until 1987.
