Scope and Contents: These oral history transcripts were created by Mohamed El Nawawy, a doctoral student in Journalism, for Dr. Kathryn Ward's Sociology 514 class in 1998. They document Delyte Morris's tenure as Southern Illinois University President, including his resignation, race and minority relations, the Vietnam War student protests, and his reputation as a visionary. El Nawawy interviewed Ben Gelman, a journalist for The Southern Illinoisan during Morris's presidency; Leo Gher, a Professor of Radio and Television at Southern Illinois University and a student under Morris; and Ralph Becker,a student and student-employee of SIU while Morris was president. This collection also contains Nawawy's notes, newspaper clippings about the three individuals who were intereviewed, and consent forms.
