Bonds for duplicate checks to Illinois soldiers, 1866 Bounty Act, 1868-1872 | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center
Extent: 1.0 Folders
Scope and Contents: A collection of documents submitted by Illinois soldiers or their dependents between 1868 and 1872 seeking duplicate checks to replace those issued under the 1866 Bounty Act but lost or missing. Applicants had to furnish the names and signatures of two persons willing to serve as sureties on a bond for twice the amount of the original check before the Treasury Department would issue a duplicate check. The documents consist of printed forms, filled in by the applicants and their sureties, or written affidavits, witnessed, some sealed, and most bearing 25-cent stamps. Some of the claims were filed by second or third parties to whom the veteran had signed over his check. The collection covers 48 individual cases spanning 33 Illinois counties.
