John W. Bell (1846-1895), a native of Warren, Ohio, enlisted in the 84th Ohio Infantry in 1862 and served three months. He later joined the navy and served on the U.S.S. General Pillow, stationed at Cairo, until he was discharged in June 1864. Listed as a portrait painter in the 1880 census, Bell is now remembered for his landscapes. He married Ella Metcalf in 1880. After Bell died in 1895, Ella applied for and was granted a widow's pension; she died in 1939 in Warren. Author: Aaron M. Lisec
