Film Production Unit records, 1940-1981 | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center
The Film Production Unit records consist of motion picture films created by the unit, as well as supporting documents such as film work prints and outtakes, correspondence, photographic material, scripts, film festival ephemera and brochures, and award certificates. Some films capture aspects of Southern Illinois University history and are promotional in nature, while the majority of the films are educational and mass produced to be used in a classroom. There are instances where work prints and outtakes of a given film are included in the collection but not the finished film.
Films of particular interest include “Moratorium” about Vietnam War protests nationwide in 1969, the 1970 Mississippi River Festival, “This Land Is” about life and culture in Southern Illinois in the late 1960s, the 1967 NCAA gymnastics championship won by SIU’s men’s team, homecoming footage of the university’s 1949 75th anniversary Diamond Jubilee, and the “Year of the Saluki” showcasing the university in 1960.
