The Latin American Institute records document its activities from its 1957 inception to its termination by the Board of Trustees in 1973. The Latin America Institute was created to help give Southern Illinois University Carbondale and its students a greater understanding and appreciation of Latin American nations and their cultures.
The collection is arranged into 10 series: Administrative Correspondence and Reference Files, Institutional Activities, Annual Activities, Publications, Partnered Programs, International Study Programs, Student Organizations, Latin American Library Materials, National Organizations, and Printed Materials.
The majority of the collection is correspondence from the Latin American Institute to other universities and government bodies, and documents pertaining to the acquisition of Latin American library materials. The collection also includes detailed documentation of the Summer Study Program to Mexico that was offered by the Institute from 1960-1973, which include descriptions of the program and correspondence from participates.
Another series of note is Series 9: National Organizations which contains documentation of the Latin American Institute’s role on a national and international scale, including cooperation with various Latin American governments to develop and expand education in these countries. Together with Series 6: Partnered Programs, which contains correspondence and brochures from other Latin American programs from universities both nationally and internationally, Series 9 shows how the Latin American Institute allowed SIU to become internationally recognized throughout the Americas.
