Scope and Contents: Letters, diaries, documents, photographs, and artifacts related to the World War I service of Private Orval L. Van Cleave, 47th Infantry, 4th Division, of Bainbridge, Indiana. Seven letters to Van Cleave include four from Ruth Lewman (1895-1973), later his wife, mostly dating from July 1919. Diaries cover the period from his enlistment in September 1917 through training at Camps Taylor and Shelby; also a period in early 1919 during service in occupied Germany. Documents include paybook, military passes, ship berth assignment, and employment certificate upon discharge. Artifacts include maps of France and Germany, a unit flag, assorted buttons, and five pieces of battlefield shrapnel, including three shell fuses.
