Scope and Contents: The records of the Shawnee Group of the Sierra Club include by-laws, meeting minutes, correspondence newsletters, maps and news clippings. Meeting minutes are from the group's executive committee and are limited to the 1983-1986 period. Correspondence is found mainly in project files. There is a fairly complete set of newsletters from 1972-1987. There are several files related to the USDA Forest Service's second Roadless Areas Review and Education program (RARE II, 1977-1980) and the subsequent Research Natural Areas process, though which the group worked to get several areas of the Shawnee National Forest designated as wilderness areas. One third of the collection documents successful efforts to stop the city of Marion, Ill., from constructing a resevoir by damming up Sugar Creek.
