Brief Description: A special program for providing intensive English courses to non-native English speakers began in 1964, as a cooperative effort between SIU and the non-profit corporation English Language Service. When the program ended in 1966, SIU established its own program of Linguistics. In 1972, the center was places under the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts as a cooperative activity with the Department of Linguistics.
