Brief Description: Single 1918 pocket diary records Jerry J. Smatlak's experience in World War I from May 5 to December 31.  Brief entries describe Smatlak's activities every day during that span, from rest days to drilling to combat.  The diary ends with the 132nd Infantry, as part of the 33rd Division, occupying the Duchy of Luxembourg.  Single photograph of Jerry J. Biographical Note for Smatlak, Jerry J. (c. 1894) :

Jerry J. Smatlak appears in the 1910 and 1920 censuses, living with his parents in the predominantly Czech South Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago's West Side.  Smatlak's parents emigrated from Bohemia in 1888, and Jerry was born about 1894.  In the 1910 census, Jerry is listed as an errand boy, aged 16.  In the 1920 census, he is listed as a store clerk, aged 26.

Smetlak served in Co. F, 132nd Infantry, in the American Expeditionary Force.  He sailed for France in May, 1918, and saw action in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, among other engagements.
