Brief Description: The Madeleine Smith Photograph collection is a small collection of photographs depicting Madeleine Smith, Gabriel Savignon (University of Illinois French faculty), and French poet Stéphane Mallarmé's home in Valvins.  It also includes several postcards collected during Smith's European travel, depicting Italian Medieval, Renaissance, and Enlightenment art, sculpture, and architecture, with emphasis on Rome, Venice, and Ravenna.

Biographical Note for Smith, Madeleine Marion, (1907-) : Madeleine Smith joined the Southern Illinois State Normal University faculty 1929 in the Department of Foreign Languages where she taught French.  From April 1943 – November 1945 she served as a member of the Signal Corps in the War Department in Washington D. C., and returned to Southern Illinois to teach in December 1945.  In 1946 she was selected as 1 of 100 American French teachers to visit France as a goodwill visit through the Cultural Counsellor of the French Embassy in the United States.  Smith spent previous time in France in 1931 at the University of Paris, and later in 1935 when she travelled throughout France and other European counties.
