Scope and Contents: The Samuel Putnam papers contain Putnam's correspondence and the manuscripts of several of his books and articles, particularly his translations. The first twelve boxes contain typed manuscripts of his two major translations, Cervantes', Don Quixote and Rabelais' works. Boxes 12 through 21 contain Putnam's correspondence from 1908 until his death in 1950, in chronological order. Also included is his wife Riva's correspondence on his behalf from 1950 to 1962. Since carbons were kept of most of Putnam's letters, this correspondence provides an almost complete record of his creative and translation work. Holograph and typed manuscripts of both published and unpublished works, primarily from Putnam's later years, form the next segment of the collection, including the uncompleted second volume of European Caravan, an anthology of European writers. Boxes 37-40 contain photographs taken by Mrs.Putnam in Brazil. Packages 1-8 contain his scrapbooks of clippings, although Package 6, his Brazilian trip album, includes several letters as well.
